Medically reviewed by AHPRA-registered GPs — Last updated May 2026

Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common sexual dysfunction in men, affecting up to 1 in 3 Australian men at some point. PE is defined as persistent ejaculation within one minute of penetration, accompanied by inability to delay climax and associated distress. Despite being highly treatable, it remains under-discussed.

Treatment options

  • Dapoxetine (Priligy) — Short-acting SSRI specifically for PE. Taken 1–3 hours before sexual activity, on demand.
  • Off-label SSRIs — In carefully chosen low doses, daily SSRIs can help men with persistent PE.
  • Topical anaesthetic sprays/creams — Reduce penile sensitivity. Available OTC or by prescription.
  • Behavioural techniques — Stop-start method and pelvic floor exercises improve ejaculatory control.

Approximately 1 in 3 men with PE also experience erectile dysfunction. Your GP will assess both conditions and recommend a combined approach if needed.
