Male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) affects roughly half of all men by middle age. It is caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which shrinks hair follicles over time until they stop producing visible hair. The condition is genetic and progressive — earlier treatment produces better results.

Evidence-based treatments

  • Finasteride (1mg daily) — Oral prescription (Schedule 4) that blocks 5-alpha reductase, reducing scalp DHT by ~60%. Decades of clinical evidence showing it slows loss and promotes regrowth.
  • Minoxidil (topical) — Vasodilator that increases blood flow to follicles, prolonging the growth phase. Available OTC or by prescription in higher concentrations.
  • Combination therapy — Finasteride plus minoxidil together consistently outperform either alone.

What to expect

Hair loss treatment is a long-term commitment. Shedding in the first 1–3 months is normal. Visible results typically appear after 3–6 months. Treatment must be continued to maintain results — stopping leads to resumed hair loss within 6–12 months.
